Kangaroo Island Fires PDF Print

Station 20 was part of a 120 strong fire fighting contingent that was sent to Kangaroo Island in South Australia to help combat several large scale bush fires threatening areas of the island.

3 fire fighters and 1 staff member attended for a total of 5 days which involved everything from IMT (Incident Management Team) work, mopping up, patrolling, fire fighting and back burning. These members were flown out of Sydney and into Adelaide airport where they were bussed to the South Australian Police Academy for the night. From there they were transported by bus to the coast line to take a ferry to Kangaroo Island. From there, yet another bus ride to take them to the base camp setup on the island, some 24 hours later!

Fire fighters were rostered on for 12-14 hour night shifts each night, utilizing the local school at the base camp as their temporary residence. After a shift, fire fighters would return to the base camp to be fed by the Salvation Army and then sleep the day away inside an allocated classroom. This would continue right up until Friday morning where fire fighters completed their shift at 08:00 and were flown directly to Adelaide airport straight after their shift had ended. Then flying directly to Sydney to be picked up by the Fire Control Center bus and taken home.
